Join us on our weekly trip to Makola Market. Watch videos of how we source the freshest spices, produce, and ingredients for our store.
Ever wondered where we get the freshest spices, the ripest plantains, and the best shito ingredients in Accra? Come along on our weekly sourcing trip to Makola Market — the beating heart of Accra's food scene.
The 5 AM Wake-Up
Our day starts before dawn. By 5:30 AM, we're already on the road heading to Makola. The early bird gets the freshest produce — and the best prices. By the time the market is in full swing at 8 AM, the best tomatoes and peppers are already spoken for.
Meeting Our Suppliers
We've built relationships with the same market women for years. Auntie Akosua has the best scotch bonnet peppers — she grows them herself in Aburi. Maame Esi's dawadawa is fermented the traditional way, with no shortcuts. These relationships are what make our products special.
Watch: Full Market Tour
We filmed this full walkthrough so you can experience the sights, sounds, and energy of Makola from wherever you are:
Want to visit Makola yourself?
Go early (before 8 AM), wear comfortable shoes, and bring cash in small denominations. The market women appreciate when you greet them in Twi — try "Maakye!" (Good morning!)
Every product in our store starts with a trip like this. When you order from Accra Fresh Market, you're getting ingredients chosen by hand, not from a warehouse.
