Discover Ghana's most iconic condiment. Learn what shito is, how it's made, and the many ways to enjoy this rich, spicy pepper sauce.
If you've ever eaten at a Ghanaian home or restaurant, you've probably seen a dark, oily, intensely flavored sauce sitting in a jar on the table. That's shito — and once you try it, you'll put it on everything.
What Exactly is Shito?
Shito (pronounced "SHEE-toh") is a Ghanaian hot pepper sauce made from a blend of dried chili peppers, dried fish or shrimp, onions, tomatoes, and ginger, all slow-cooked in oil until deeply caramelized. The result is a complex, umami-rich condiment that's spicy, smoky, and savory all at once.
How to Use Shito
With Rice Dishes
A spoonful alongside jollof, waakye, or plain rice transforms the meal.
With Bread
Spread on toast or bread for a quick, flavorful snack.
As a Dip
Perfect with kelewele, plantain chips, or fried yam.
In Stews
Add a tablespoon to any stew for extra depth and heat.
